Linda C. Smith is a native of Utah and began her career in dance at the age of four with Virginia Tanner's Children's Dance Theatre. In 1966 she become a founding member of Repertory Dance Theatre where she fulfilled her dream becoming a performer, teacher, choreographer, writer, producer and eventually, in 1983, the Artistic Director for the company. Evidence of her commitment to dance preservation is seen in RDT’s collection of historic dance re-constructions that includes choreography by 100 of America’s most revered choreographers. Linda has dedicated her life to finding ways to make the arts relevant and to communicating the value of dance in the life of a community. Her pursuits have led to the development of the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, the establishment of the RDT Community School, providing commissions for established and emerging choreographers, and the creation of multi-disciplinary activities that focus attention on the environment, social issues, multi-ethnic history, sustainability and community. Linda's performing experience spans over 90 works and she has taught in over 1000 schools bringing the magic of dance to students and teachers with her unique demonstrations, lectures, classes and professional development workshops. She is most at home encouraging audiences of all ages to imagine, create and communicate with the language of movement. Linda is a graduate and an Adjunct Associate Professor of dance at the University of Utah and is a certified Movement Specialist in the Utah Artists-in-Education Program. She has received numerous honors, including Honors in the Arts awards (Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce), the Outstanding Achievement Award in Art (YWCA), Community Builders Award (Utah Women’s Alliance for Building Community), the Outstanding Alumnus in Fine Arts Award 2004 (University of Utah), and was recognized as one of Utah’s 30 Women Visionaries – Women to Watch (Utah Business Magazine).
Angela Banchero-Kelleher danced with RDT from 1985-92 during which time she performed many roles in both the historical and contemporary repertory of the company. In 1992, Angela returned to school to earn an MFA in modern dance from the University of Utah. She has performed internationally and has taught at Ohio University, University of Utah and Westminster College. She is currently an adjunct faculty member at Weber State University. Angela is a dancer with the Utah Arts Council Arts-In-Education program and Contemporary Dance Works and has served on the dance panel of the Utah Arts Council.
Nicholas Cendese was born and raised in Salt Lake City. He graduated from the University of Utah’s department of modern dance with a BFA. Nicholas danced with CDT until graduation from high school, after which he received the Elizabeth R. Hayes dance scholarship. He was also chosen as the Outstanding Senior in the College of Fine Arts. He performed as a guest for RDT in the Olympic Arts Festival production of With My Red Fires. This is his fourth year with Repertory Dance Theatre.
Chara Huckins started dancing at the age of three with Virginia Tanner’s Children’s Dance Theater. She earned a BFA in modern dance from the University of Utah where she was the recipient of the Elizabeth R. Hayes Scholarship, the Outstanding Student Award, the American Scholar Award and was listed in Who’s Who Among Students in Colleges and Universities. She danced with the University’s Performing dance Company for four years. Chara is currently teaching and choreographing at the Children’s Dance Theater and throughout the Utah school systems. She joined RDT in 1995 after performing as a guest with the company for two seasons.
Thayer Jonutz earned his BA in modern dance from Brigham Young University. He has toured internationally to locations including Tonga, Japan, The Philippines, South Korea, Mexico and India. Thayer grew up in Northern California where he began dancing. He enjoys roofing and occasionally returns home to work with his father and brother. He recently premiered his first solo concert in Sacramento, California. He is now training for his second marathon.
Joshua Larson is a long-time dancer and actor now in his fifth season with RDT. He received his BFA from Ohio University and his MA from the University of Utah. Josh has danced locally with SB Dance and Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company. He guest teaches and performs regularly in Utah and around the country. His new hobby is beating Thayer in his next marathon.
Lynne Listing has both a BFA in dance from Western Michigan University and an MFA in dance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Lynne danced with Martita Goshen’s Earthworks in New York and is now in her eighth season with Repertory Dance Theatre. In addition to her dancing, Lynne is the costume mistress for the company. Lynne is a guest teacher and choreographer in the Utah schools. In 1999 she was named Best Lead Female Dancer by the Salt Lake City
Weekly.
Chien-Ying Wang hails from Taiwan and started her professional dance training at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts. This is her fourth season with RDT. Chien-Ying received her BFA at Northern Illinois University and an MFA at Ohio State University in 2002. Chien-Ying is a certified Labanotation teacher and has taught both ballet and modern dance at OSU. Her performing experience includes solo roles in several ballets
(Giselle, Coppelia, Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, and
Paquita), plus contemporary works by Paula Frasz, Susan Hadley, John Giffin, and Victoria Uris.
