American Indian Dance Theatre |
| October 1 Wednesday $16-20 adult; $12-16 student American Indian Dance Theatre on Wednesday, October 1, has been enthusiastically received by the press and the public and created a new level of awareness of American Indian culture. The company, formed in 1987, was a pioneer in bringing authentic American Indian dance and music to the world. Barbara Schwei, a New York based concert and theatrical producer, and Hanay Geiogamah, a renowned Native American playwrite/director and a member of the Kiowa and Delaware Tribes of Oklahoma, wondered why every country except the United States had its own national dance companies representing the diverse segments of their cultures. Although adjusted to fit a theatrical setting, the basic structure of the dances has been preserved. “This company provides Native Americans with a chance to share their heritage and culture with the American public and the rest of the world.” All the tribes represented have endorsed the production. The dancers have been chosen from the most prestigious Native American festivals and dance competitions held in North America. Among them are Assiniboine (Saskatchewan), Comanche and Creek (Oklahoma), Cherokee (North Carolina), Menominee/Potawatomi (Wisconsin), Navajo (New Mexico), Southern Ute (Colorado), Cree (Alberta and Montana), Sioux (the Dakotas and Saskatchewan), Nez Perce (Idaho), Ojibway and Tsau T’ini/Blackfoot (Alberta) and Zuni (New Mexico).
